  1. No Progressive Overload/Unstructured Program: Your body adapts to exercise over time, and if you don't gradually increase the weight, reps, or intensity of your workouts, your progress may plateau. Progressive overload is crucial to keep challenging your body and making progress.
  2. Inadequate Nutrition: Your body needs fuel to build muscle, provide energy during workouts, and recover. If you aren’t seeing progress in your performance in the gym or in your sport, take a look at whether you are eating enough.
  3. Insufficient Sleep: Athletes need more sleep! While your general gym goer can get by with 7-8 hours a night, those of you putting in serious training hours need closer to 9-10 hours. If you often feel run down, it’s time to work on a sleep routine.
  4. Overtraining: Overtraining can be counterproductive to your fitness progress. Pushing yourself too hard without proper rest and recovery can lead to injuries, fatigue, and burnout. Rest days are productive.
  5. Misaligned Goals: Sometimes what we need to do in the gym to perform best in our sport or in life doesn’t match what we want to do. This can make it hard to stay consistent and can lead to varying your workout program too much. Sometimes you’re going to have to put aside your favorite activities to focus on what you need to do to hit your goals. Other times, it might be best to re-evaluate your goals and get them better aligned with what you enjoy. A good coach can find ways to work with you to provide a balanced routine that you enjoy, help you re-evaluate your goals if necessary, and tell you when you’re going to have to put your head down and do the work so you can perform your best.
